If Deadline's account holds, this settles who controls the film's international rights, though not when or where it opens.
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has bought all international rights to “Buddy,” Deadline reported on October 1. Deadline says it understands the deal to be in the mid-seven figures, and that UTA Independent Film Group and Range Media Partners represented the filmmakers in the sale.
“Buddy” is the feature directing debut of Casper Kelly, who made “Too Many Cooks,” and it premiered in the Midnight section at Sundance. As Deadline relays the synopsis, the title character stars in a children’s television show whose “seemingly perfect world” starts to crack when one child won’t join in. Kelly wrote it with Jamie King, and the cast includes Patton Oswalt, Michael Shannon, Keegan-Michael Key, Topher Grace, Delaney Quinn and Cristin Milioti.
Deadline says Roadside and Saban released the film in the United States, and puts the domestic box office at $26.5 million off a budget under $5 million. It gives no international release date.
